Well, it’s been a long time. There’s actually good reasons for that, which I’ll delve into with my next post. But for now, the birth story of my sweet little Piper Joy!
My due date was December 28, and my last day of work was December 14. I really, really wanted Piper to wait until January to be born so that I could spend some time with Sam and enjoy Christmas, but at 38 weeks I was progressed enough that I didn’t think I was going to get my wish. Every night I went to bed thinking, “Well, I guess I might have her tonight.” But days and nights and my due date went by, and no baby! I was fine with this–I was pretty comfortable, enjoying Sam, spending fun times with my mom…and savoring my last moments of sleep!!
It’s weird though, when you are overdue to have a baby, you somehow become convinced that the baby is never coming. Even though I wasn’t rushing her, I settled into a routine and fully expected that I’d go to 42 weeks. So when I went to bed on Sunday night, I fully expected a normal night. I went to bed at 9 and woke up at 945 to use the bathroom–not unusual. I got back in bed and at 10 had a contraction–also not unusual. But then I had contractions at 1005, 1010,and 1015. Geoff was downstairs playing video games, and I decided to stay up and time them, but didn’t tell him yet because they were very short and not painful. I chatted with my sister in law and a friend on Facebook, and when I was still contracting 5 minutes apart at 1030, I texted Geoff to let him know but told him to stay downstairs because I still didn’t know if it was real labor. At 1045 I was still just hanging out in bed when I heard a pop! And felt my water break. Then I knew-we were really having a baby!
I called my midwife but told her I wanted to spend as much time as I could at home before we went to the birth center. She already thought my labor was going to go quickly, so she told me to gather my things and start getting calories and fluid in my system and call back as soon as I wanted to leave. Geoff headed to 7-11 to pick up some drinks while I finished packing my bag (which I hadn’t packed because I was so sure she wasn’t coming!!) he was gone less than 10 minutes, and by the time he got back, my contractions were less than 3 minutes apart and I was ready to leave!
On the way there, we were still making light conversation between my contractions and I had no idea how close we were to meeting Piper! I remember telling Geoff how I just hoped I was more than 3 when we got there. Well, around midnight we arrived and I had my first check–6 cm! I was happy but still expecting to labor for awhile. I requested to get in the tub, so Joanne (my midwife) got it all set up and at 1230 I got in.
She had already realized how fast things were going and went to prepare for the delivery. I was with my mom and Geoff and she told me to send someone out if I felt pressure to push. I fully expected that to be another few hours, so I had Geoff turn on a Pandora station (which I could not for the life of me tell you what I picked.) About 15 minutes later, I was very confused when I felt like I really needed to PUSH! And more confused, and a little panicky when I had no choice 5 minutes later and I WAS pushing! I began to get super anxious and felt like there was NO way I could possibly push her out. Looking back, it was just transition, but then I was convinced I really was incapable of doing it.
Right then, Joanne came back and calmly assured me I’d be ok. She checked me, called me complete, and it was game time! Since I pushed for over 90 minutes with sam, I was surprised again at how quickly things were moving–definitely upped the intensity! Pushing was difficult but I was focused and pushing in the tub was much easier than in the bed. After a few pushes, her head was down and next thing I knew, she was out! 3 hours since my first contraction and I was holding my baby! After everything with Sam, I was shocked and thankful to have a delivery go exactly how I’d hoped 🙂
